Geneva, Switzerland - Portugal goalkeeper Quim won't play any part in Euro 2008 after fracturing his right wrist in training on Friday, the team's medical staff confirmed Saturday. The 32-old-old Quim, who plays for Benfica and has been capped 26 times by Portugal, was understudy to first-choice goalkeeper Ricardo for his country's opening game later Saturday against Turkey and is said to be devastated by the injury.

"Quim has fractured his wrist. It is not serious but he will not be able to play and will be out of action for four to six weeks. It was in the final moments of the training session," said Portugal team doctor Henrique Jones.

Portugal have asked UEFA for permission to call up Porto goalkeeper Nuno Espirito Santo as a replacement for Quim as the player sustained the injury before his team's first match of the tournament.

A doctor from the UEFA Medical Committee and Jones both have to confirm that the injury is sufficiently serious to prevent Quim from taking part before coach Luiz Felipe Scolari can call up Nuno.
