Skopje, Macedonia - Neighbourly relations between Athens and Skopje were further soured Thursday when Macedonian President Branko Crvenkovski cancelled a trip to Athens in protest at a Greek ban on his flight. "This action by Greek authorities contradicts international norms and principles and is not contributing to development of good neighbourly relations," Crvenkovski's cabinet said in a statement.

Crvenkovski was to take part in a biennial United Nations forum on natural resources in the region, but was informed by the Greek liaison office in Skopje that his plane would not be allowed to land.

The Greeks offered "alternate" transport, but Macedonia refused, the Makfax news agency said.

Greece and Macedonia have been embroiled in a diplomatic row over the name "Macedonia," which both claim as their own.

In April, Athens blocked NATO from inviting its northern neighbour to join because of the dispute, stirring strong anti-Greek sentiment in the former Yugoslav republic.

Greece does not allow Macedonian aircraft, including the carrier MAT, to fly over its territory and applied the same ban to Crvenkovski's official aeroplane.

Greeces behaviour in modern day Europe must be condemnd by NATO and EU.But than again, both these organizations behaving just like being in a first graders club.Macedonia must put an end to name negotiations with Greece. Greece is breaking all international normes, they broke the 1995 interim agreement that UN and EU put forth between Greece and Macedonia.Greeces international agreements are not worth the paper it is written.Cut off UN sponsored talks right now,and tell Greece to go to hell.

Truth

Look at you people blinded by ignorance.

Greek culture endured years of invasions and occupation, yet we endure. Our history is our greatest achievement. We will never relinquish our culture. FYROM pops up and starts claiming it's Macedonia, and this is a giant slap in the face.

Eugene N. Borza, a professor of ancient history and regarded an expert on the history of ancient Macedon has stated that modern Slavs, both Bulgarians and Macedonians, cannot establish a link with antiquity, as the Slavs entered the Balkans centuries after the demise of the ancient Macedonian kingdom.

Alexander the Great was born in what is now west of the region of Thrace, located in GREEK Macedonia. He spread GREEK culture through his empire.

Where do the Psuedo-macedonians get off thinking they can claim our name?

Imagine if Scotland changed its name to "Republic of London" or "Elizabeth I's Country" or whatever, would the UK not be enraged? The reason I use this example is because you have a neighboring country trying to infringe on the history of another country.

To Zlatko: Ever heard of the concept of United Macedonia? The concept distributed throughout the streets of Skopje? This is more than just "innocently" taking the name. They want the region.

What type of world do we live in where Elected Presidents are banned to land their planes, at international summits.
Remember the 30's when Hitler even banned birds to fly over Germany.
World's worst behaviour, Greece cradle of Democracy, i don't think so, more like the Butt Of Humanity......

Greece must be the only country in the civilized world to resort to this kind of action.Macedonia must STOP negotiating our identity at once.Greece is not worth to fight over our name.Macedonia must tell Greece to go to hell.

one more racial provocation
By: a Macedonian indeed , Thu, 05 Jun 2008 21:16:03 GMT

How can a member of EU act with such racial politics towards my people. Greeks want to obliterate my nation in front of the eyes of the so-called European democrats. Well, I want to tell to my dear Greek neighbours and the EU general public, that even they carry on with their fascist politics towards us for the next 1000 years, me and my people will still be Macedonians.

Makedonec

"Greece and Macedonia have been embroiled in a diplomatic row over the name "Macedonia," which both claim as their own." - This is not true. The Republic of Macedonia and the Macedonian people never claimed that the name is "theirs."
The Macedonians and the Republic of Macedonia want to be called as such and have the right to self expression and identity; the Greeks on the other hand, claim that Macedonia is "theirs" and only they have the right to use it. It is a xenophobic (derived from Greek - am I allowed to use it or is it owned by Greece too?) and fascist way of thinking and acting and the sad part is that it is allowed and tolerated in Europe.
