Anchorage, Alaska - Alaska is preparing to celebrate 50 years as a state in the United States, and tourists will have plenty of opportunities to take part in "the biggest party in 50 years," according to the Anchorage-based Alaska Travel Industry Association. Straddling the Arctic Circle, Alaska became a US territory in 1867. It was not officially admitted into the Union until January 1959, however, following approval by the US House of Representatives in May 1958 and by the US Senate a month later.
The golden anniversary festivities includes lots of festivities and on the weekend of June 28 to 30, Anchorage will celebrate under the motto "We are In" with concerts, theatre performances, and an air show.
The cities of Haines and Valdez will mark the anniversary beginning on July 4. The celebration in Haines will centre on Fort William H Seward, the first permanent army post in Alaska. The post was named after the US secretary of State who negotiated the purchase of Alaska from Russia.
