Sydney - Lleyton Hewitt was deciding on Saturday whether to cancel his summer of European tennis at the French Open, Queen's club and Wimbledon after seeing specialists for a hip problem which has bothered him since January. In the worst-case scenario, the former number one and two-time Grand Slam winner could find himself out for an extended period should the last-chance option of surgery be on the table.

The 27-year-old has not played since winning one rubber in a Davis Cup sweep of Thailand in April.

In an effort to gauge his injury, Hewitt has been hitting lightly this week, trimming his training sessions to a mere 90 minutes from their usual three hours.

"The hip is starting to feel a little better, but I'm yet to fully test it out on court," said Hewitt, who could drop towards the 50 mark in the rankings if he stays away through the summer.

"The specialist did a couple more tests but the results won't be back for a few days. Once I get those, I can make a decision on the French Open and the grass-court season," he told Australian media.

Hewitt's management said that were surgery required, that is what it will be, though recovery could keep Hewitt from a Davis Cup tie in late September as well as cause him to miss the US Open.
