Beirut - A United Nations peacekeeper was killed and another was wounded when their car went off the road in southern Lebanon, Lebanese security sources said. A car for the Malaysian battalion affiliated with United Nations Interim Forces in Southern Lebanon (UNIFIL) turned over and slid into a valley near the village of Tebnine, the sources said.

One peacekeeper was killed and another was wounded in the accident, the sources said.

The wounded person was transfered by a French UN peacekeeper to a hospital in Tebnine for treatment, the source said.

The 13,000-member multinational force, a massive enlargement of the 2,000-strong UN observer force already long in southern Lebanon, was authorized on August 11, 2006 as part of the United Nations Security Council resolution that brought a cease-fire to Lebanon after more than a month of hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel.

Indonesia and Malaysia have each offered to send 1,000 troops to Lebanon. Both countries, with Muslim majority populations, have no diplomatic ties with Israel and strongly support the Palestinian cause.
