Amman - About two thousand Jordanians took part in a demonstration in downtown Amman Friday to protest Israel's foundation in historical Palestine 60 years ago. The licensed rally, which was sponsored by the country's Islamic- led opposition parties and trade unions, came as a culmination for a series of protests and sit-ins in Amman and other Jordanian major cities to mark the Naqba (Day of Tragedy), when Israel was founded in 1948.

Participants raised placards and shouted slogans reasserting the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes which they were forced to leave and in support of the Palestinian resistance against Israel.

Jordan with its 5.5-million population, is home to about 1.8 million Palestinian refugees.

Jordan agreed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994 but opposition parties, led by the Islamic Action Front (IAF), and 14 trade unions still oppose the peace pact and any steps towards normalization of ties with the Jewish state.
