Manila - Three people, including two police officers, were killed Monday in a mid-morning robbery in the Philippine capital, a police report said. Two suspects riding a motorcycle fired at a businessman in a sports utility vehicle along a busy street in Manila's Malate district, the report said.
The suspects carted away 1 million pesos (23,809 dollars) from the victim, identified as Alfred Dy, an entrepreneur engaged in buying and selling businesses. Dy died on the spot.
Responding policemen chased the suspects, but about four accomplices waylaid the law enforcement officers, and gunfire broke out. One of the officers was killed on the spot while the other died while being treated in a nearby hospital.
Two more people, both civilians, were wounded in the firefight.
