Los Angeles - Action film Iron Man beat out newcomers Speed Racer and What Happens in Vegas at US box offices over the weekend. Iron Man brought in more than 50 million dollars for the weekend, keeping it atop the charts for the second week with a total gross of 177 million dollars, according to studio estimates. The action flick stars Robert Downey Jr as a tycoon who invents a metal suit that allows him to become a superhero.
Speed Racer, a live action version of the popular Japanese anime cartoon, from Matrix directors Andy and Larry Wachowski, looked set to barely take second place with 20.2 million dollars, according to figures released Sunday.
It was just ahead of What Happens in Vegas, a comedy starring Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher in a Las Vegas marriage gone awry. It earned 20 million dollars.
