London - A majority of Labour Party voters in Britain believes that the party would have a better chance of winning the next general election if Prime Minister Gordon Brown stood down, an opinion poll published in the Times newspaper said Wednesday. The poll will make uncomfortable reading for Brown, who is still facing unrest from within his party over tax policy, and who is still riding out the fall-out from a devastating setback in local elections and in London mayoral elections last week.
According to the poll, some 55 per cent of Labour voters believe the party would be more likely to beat the Conservatives at the next election if Brown resigned "to make way for a younger, fresher, more charismatic alternative."
The poll by Populus interviewed a random sample of 1,509 adults by telephone between May 2 and 4 - after the elections of last week.
