Shanghai - At least three people were killed and 12 injured, including three severely burnt, in a fire on a city bus in Shanghai Monday morning, a city official told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa. Earlier Xinhua news agency had reported an explosion on the bus.

"It was not an explosion, but a fire," the police spokeswoman told dpa, adding that the exact cause of the fire was still being investigated.

There were about 50 passengers on board the bus traveling in the north-east of Shanghai between Guoxing and Shunguo roads in Yangpu District when the fire broke out at 9 am (0100 GMT), engulfing the vehicle.

"I heard a bang, somewhat louder than normal fireworks," an employee of a nearby restaurant told
