SACRAMENTO: A water-guzzling contest organized by a radio station ended tragically on Friday after a participant - 28yr-old woman Jennifer Strange died of water intoxication.
The woman was one of many participants in the “Hold Your Wee For a Wii” competition where the contestants were expected to drink as much water as they could without having to urinate. The last person to give in to the urge would win the recently released Nintendo video game system.
Ms Strange had hoped to win the video game system for her three children believing a few extra pints of the thirst-quenching would do no harm besides overloading the bladder. Participants first started off on small 220ml (8 ounces) bottles of water at 15-minute intervals. Those who progressed beyond five or more bottles without showing any discomfort were then given larger bottles to drink.
Ms Strange was among those who had advanced to the bigger bottles, according to fellow contestant James Ybarra who quit after five small bottles. But Ms Strange too quit after some time and headed for home complaining of a severe headache.
She called the Radiological Associates of Sacramento where she spoke to the supervisor asking for the day off as “her head was hurting her real bad” co-worker Laura Rios said. She was later found dead in her home.
Medical investigation by the County Coroner confirmed that Ms Strange's death was caused by water intoxication (or water poisoning) - a condition where the body's vital fluids are diluted by the person's excessive water consumption.
A nephrologist explained that the body's sodium levels may dip below alarming levels by drinking too much water. The patient may experience nausea, headaches, light-headedness, vomiting, blurred vision, even behavioral changes. The actual damage may be much worse, causing the brain to swell, leading to seizures, coma and even death.
The contest was organized by the KDND 107.9 radio station as part of a promotional campaign.

I love how everyone is jumping on this woman's case. Clearly she's a little looped, but she's also technically right.
'Drinking excessive liquids without urinating in extreme cases may result in death from water intoxication. One of the first signs of water intoxication is swelling. Other symptoms of hyponatremia are nausea and dizziness. If one experiences these symptoms and suspect water intoxication, stop drinking more water and seek medical attention. Eat some food to replace the electrolytes(salts) that are being diluted by the water'

the dangers of water intoxication aren't new and in fact quite well publicized (at least in the sports community where people tend to fluctuate between dehydration and drinking too much).
i find it sad that whoever designed the promotional campaign and the contest apparently did not check on the safety aspects of the competition. given the fact that they did make the participants move to larger bottles means that they did anticipate a certain water intake, and any physiologist could have told them at which point people would reach dangerous levels.
by the way, letting people relieve themselves woud *NOT* have helped in this case, because the problem is the dilution of minerals in the body fluids, not the amount of urine held in the bladder. the kidney usually does an amazing job at keeping wanted minerals where they belong, but some of the minerals is invariably 'washed out' into the urine. excessive fluid intake amplifies this problem and ultimately leads to the critical or fatal problems described in the article.

Carol,
If you read the article, you'll see that it wasn't the witholding of a "wii" break that killed Ms Strange - it was the drinking too much water part. Granted, holding on to your "wii" for too long can cause problems down the road but I don't think anyone has ever died from it.

That is so sad the way she died. It makes me insensed about the nightmare we have in our society. There may be times when a person desperately has to relieve himself. If he is not allowed to descretely handle it in an emergency (such as behind a tree or dumpster) there is something insane about a society that instantly assumes perversion. The real evil people are always in hiding and get away with their sinful deeds. Sneaking up on some poor guy who may have been unable to reach a bathroom because he has been on the road or having someone arrested just because you were looking when you shouldn't have been (for indecent exposure) defies all sense of humanity. How much bladder and kidney problems have been caused because people were unable to go when they had to whether at work or no access to facilities on long trips (never mind any contests)? A person atleast must have the opportunity to explain this and have it accepted. We are inhumane as long as this issue continues to be swept under the carpet and as long as those who do outrageous things to young children continue to do so anyway!
