Wellington - Scientists examining the most perfect example of the largest squid ever caught make a disappointing discovery Wednesday: Their specimen is female. They had hoped that they were examining the first male colossal squid ever captured so they could learn about the creature's reproduction.
However, late in the day, the squid had defrosted enough to reveal its ovaries.
Scientists in Wellington are carrying out the examination as the 495-kilogram squid slowly thaws after being kept frozen since it was caught in Antarctic waters 15 months ago.
