ROCKAWAY, N.J., Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- R&D Magazine has announced the
finalists for the 8th Annual Innovator of the Year and 43rd Annual Scientist
of the Year awards, which recognize individuals who exemplify the ideals of
R&D in academia, industry, and nationally sponsored research. This year, the
nomination process was facilitated online with ten finalists -- five
scientists and five innovators -- chosen by the magazine's readers. The
finalists must now be put to a vote for the two winners, who will be announced
at the R&D 100 Awards Banquet at Navy Pier, Chicago, on Oct. 16. All are

Scientist of the Year
The qualifying individual has, in the course of his/her profession,
substantially advanced the pursuit of the science, even changing the way
science itself is done. Past winners include J. Craig Venter, Stephen Wolfram,
and Tim Berners-Lee. 2008 finalists are:

-- Robert Langer, institute professor, Massachusetts Institute of
Technology

Innovator of the Year
The qualifying individual is one who demonstrates excellence and
creativity in the recent design, development, and introduction into the
marketplace of one or more technologically significant products. Leadership in
this process is also a prerequisite. Past winners include Larry Page, Burt
Rutan, and Dean Kamen. 2008 finalists are:
