Berlin - Tokyo-born Mitsuko Uchida is to become the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra's first woman pianist in residence, the Philharmonic announced Tuesday. When she was 12, Uchida moved with her family to Vienna where she studied at the Conservatory of Music.

She launched her career on the concert stage after winning the international Beethoven competition in Vienna in 1969. She won the Warsaw Chopin competition prize one year later.

More recently Uchida has become known for her Mozart interpretations. In October she will perform Mozart's Piano Concerto 12 at Berlin's philharmonic concert hall.

The Berlin Philharmonic orchestra is also planning to visit Japan and Korea later this year where it will perform a core part of its repertoire - Brahms, Mahler and Beethoven.
