Oslo- German Chancellor Angela Merkel agreed Saturday in Oslo to increase bilateral cooperation with her Norwegian counterpart Jens Stoltenberg in the area of energy. The two sides agreed to work together on Norwegian-run projects to store carbon dioxide gas underground.

Cooperation was the only way to reach "the very ambitious political goals of both countries relating to climate," Merkel said after meeting the Social Democrat prime minister.

Both governments would also push for a replacement to the Kyoto Protocol on climate change.

Merkel also visited the Munch Museum, dedicated to Norway's most famous painter Edvard Munch, and did some sightseeing during her one- day trip to Oslo.

In the evening, the chancellor was scheduled to attend the gala opening of the newly renovated Oslo Opera House with King Harald V and Queen Sonja.
