Kabul - Heavy casualties were feared as an explosion rocked a power plant in southern Afghanistan Saturday morning, police said. The explosion took place in a hydro power plant in the Gerishk district of the volatile southern province of Helmand, provincial police chief Mohammad Hussain Andewal told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.
He confirmed that there were casualties, but could not provide any figures as the authorities in the area were still looking into the incident.
Andewal also could not say what triggered the explosion.
Helmand province has been a stronghold of Taliban militants who have waged a bloody insurgency to oust the Western-backed Afghan government, six years after their Islamic regime was toppled in a US- led invasion.
