Santiago de Chile - In September 1973, General Augusto Pinochet pushed the elected president of Chile, Slavador Allende, out of office. Thirty-five years later, Pinochet's supporters have kidnapped an internet website dedicated to Allende. Instead of giving information about the socialist president, who took his life during the putsch, the internet site www.salvadorallende.cl on Wednesday contained hymns of praise to the former dictator, who died in 2006.

The website campaigns for a memorial to be built to Pinochet, who ruled Chile nearly 17 years with an iron hand that killed and tortured his opponents.

According to news reports, it was possible the website was taken over because the foundation dedicated to Allende had failed to renew its webaddress.

Isabel Allende, daughter of the Chilean leader, was angry.

"That is totally outrageous, a travesty," she was quoted as saying.

The University of Chile which administered the website said the conflict must be resolved with an administrative process.
