Nuremberg, Germany - Men are generally doing their own shopping for personal care products these days, and in the process they are lining up an array of different creams and styling products in the bathroom, a survey showed. According to the data compiled by the German market research firm Information Resources in Nuremberg, 87 per cent of the men asked said they choose their own personal care products. The younger the man, the less likely he is to be swayed by his partner, wife or mother in making his decision, the survey showed.
Men also prefer products specially designed for them. About 60 per cent of those questioned said they buy men's products either exclusively or overwhelmingly. By contrast only 10 per cent said they find so-called unisex products better.
About one-third of the men surveyed said they had no particular preference when choosing a product.
The survey was based on 400 extensive interviews with shoppers conducted in stores. Apart from shaving products, deodorant and shower gel, men are buying more and more facial care products, anti- aging creams, hair styling products, lotions and colouration creams.
Overall in Germany, sales of cosmetic products for men are on the rise, according to the market research firm. Last year, sales of men's creams, lotions and tonics were up nearly 5 per cent. The total market for personal care products and cosmetics grew about 1.2 per cent in the same time frame. Men's cosmetics accounted for about 27 per cent of total sales.
