Tegucigalpa, Honduras - At least 27 people were killed when a bus plunged 500 metres into a ravine in the Central American country of Honduras. At least 15 occupants of the bus were injured in Tuesday's accident, the newspaper El Heraldo reported Wednesday, citing government authorities.
Initial reports had put the death toll at 28.
The bus, which was old and lacked an operating license, was carrying more than 45 passengers to a weekly market when it ran off the road in San Jeronimo, 150 kilometres west of the capital, Tegucigalpa. The accident happened on a bend known as Vuelo del Angel (Flight of the Angel).
People at the scene of the mishap were surprised that there were survivors at all.
"If there really is an angel here, he protected people," witness Juana Mendoza was quoted as saying.
The cause of the accident was not immediately known, but authorities were not ruling out a technical defect in the ageing vehicle.
The driver was an adult, not a minor without a driver's license as had initially been reported.
