Tegucigalpa, Honduras - At least 28 people were killed when a bus plunged 500 metres into a ravine in the Central American country of Honduras. Another 15 people were injured in Tuesday's accident, the newspaper El Heraldo reported, citing government authorities.

The bus, which did not have an operating license, was carrying about 60 passengers when it ran off the road in San Jeronimo, 150 kilometres west of the capital, Tegucigalpa.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known, but authorities were not ruling out a technical defect in the ageing vehicle.

The driver was reportedly a minor without a drivers license.
