Miami - The Cuban musician Israel "Cachao" Lopez, a leading figure in the Cuban mambo music style from the 1930s to the 1950s, died at age 89 in Miami, Florida, the Spanish language newspaper El Nuevo Herald reported Saturday online. Lopez, a bassist and composer, died of kidney failure.
He left Cuba in 1962, working with a number of well known colleagues. His last involvement in a musical production was the Album "90 Millas" by Gloria and Emilio Estefan. His awards included a Grammy, and he has been honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
