Doctors at King's College Hospital in Denmark Hill, UK have successfully transplanted islet cells to a Type 1 diabetes patient, thereby assuring a complete cure from the condition. The pancreatic cells were obtained from the pancreas of an organ donor and injected into the patient's liver.
Revealing that the implications of this operation are enormous, Professor Stephanie Amiel, Diabetes Consultant at King's said, “This breakthrough is hugely exciting. Eventually, this could mean the end of insulin-dependence for all Type 1 diabetes sufferers."
She cautioned "More research needs to be done to perfect the islet isolation procedures and the drugs we use to prevent rejection of the islets and recurrence of the diabetes...However, it is our aim that ultimately all people with Type 1 diabetes would become eligible for islet transplantation and free from insulin dependence."
Richard Lane, from Bromley, will certainly be grateful to Professor Stephanie Amiel & her team. This 61-year-old man became the first patient to undergo the revolutionary treatment. After the operation, he commented, "I feel as if an enormous weight's been lifted off my shoulders. I can eat what I like and when I like and I don't have to worry about going out to exercise and falling down in a heap."
The procedure is relatively minor & takes about 45 minutes to perform and has been successful in Canada but this is the first time similar results have been achieved in Britain.
A major hurdle to this treatment seems to be a lack of enough organ donors to offer the process to all patients.

I have a twelve year old son with type 1 diabetes. He was diagnosed about a year ago. I would love to find more out about this possible cure. On top of being diabetic my son is also mildly mentaly retarded. He cannot do the simplest math to figure out his insulin dose. I worry when his mother and I are not around any more he will not be able to control his diabetes. If a cure is possible I would love to know about it. Thank you.

I have just been diagnosed for about a year and to have this on your mind every second of everyday is so much pressure and stress. I would love to be a volunteer for any procedures that might help cure type 1 diabetes

Being diagnosed in 2007 I'm only 32 and I feel my life is over. Dont eat this can't have that. It seems now that I spend all my money on my health and my health on making money. Is there ever going to be a light at the end of the tunnel for all of us? If and when the FDA and/or the Government decides to let the Public know of any cures {because we all know that an 8.5 billion dollar profits a year on Rx would be affected} let me know. The way I see it if we continue to withhold cures for any and all types of cancer and insulin dependent people their might not be anyone left to take money from. Put life first were more vaulable that way.

hi, i have been a type 1 diabetic for almost 12 yrs, i am no 23 yrs old and am in good health due to exercise/ healthy eating/ and GODS grace... i have never had an A1C over 6.8, but i also know that if i dont get a cure some day it will probably kill me. But i know that is not GODS WILL, so if you have a cure or maybe on to a cure please inform, or if u need volunteers, but only if this is a successful rx. please contact this email address probibly does not work, but u can call. my only concern is that fda will try to prevent a cure rather than promote one.

I am in the process of reading "Natural Cures They Don't Want You To Know About". However redundant the writer is regarding his information, The book is HIGHLY recomended.
I decided to read it since I am an HIV & Cancer patient. The medications have now spurred Type Two Diabetes. However greatful for extended lifespan, there's got to be a better way.

My Grandpa past away from diabetes and cancer. My Grandma has it also.I was once reminded of how hard it was on my family when he was very sick. He suffered so much and I am glad that he is in a better place, though we miss him so much. I am so excited to hear that others will have a chance to be free of the chains of insulin and the costs for that matter.

My 10 year old grandaughter's prayers each night since she has been able to speak have included "please help there be a cure for all the diseases". She has had Type 1 since 21 months old. When she heard there was a cure for Type 1 discovered, she thanked God for the cure and hopes someday she will be able to get the cure. She continues to pray for a cure for all of the other diseases and believes God will also answer her prayer. For whatever you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive. That is a fact of God to those who trust Him and accept His love and saving gift of grace.
Thank you to anyone having a part in the cure, especially our Lord,
Sharon Green

I am looking forward to the success of this cure. I was diagnosed with Type 2 Class C diabetes in 8/93 after having gestational diabetes in 1989. They told me that if it came back, I probably wouldn't see it until late 40's. Well surprise, surprise. I don't like the side effects of insulin and I am ready to be free from the curse. My mother is chronic. I have hope for her as well. Please send information on how to be considered for future studies even outside the US. I am interesed!

It is a breath of fresh air that science is closer to a cure. Please keep me updated. I hope soon, that here in the United States, islet cell transplants will be available. All I ever hear is that there is no hope. "It is for life" and that we will have to just live with it. I want my son to be free of this burden. The future of our young needs this. Thanks again.

I am very pleased to hear that there has been a success towards the cure as my 3 year old son was diagnosed at 2 with Diabetes. This has been very tough for our family and specially for him, since he doesn't understand that he has to eat at certain hours and not what he wants to eat. Please keep me updated. I am looking forward for my son being cured in the near future.
Regards,
Laritza Martin
