NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks trimmed sharp gains on Tuesday after the Federal Reserve slashed a key U.S. interest rate by three-quarters of a percentage point, less than many financial market participants had expected.The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> rose 254.57 points, or 2.13 percent, to 12,226.82, off a gain of more than 300 points before the Fed's rate decision was announced. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was up 33.83 points, or 2.65 percent, at 1,310.43. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was up 45.32 points, or 2.08 percent, at 2,222.33.(Editing by Jan Paschal)
