Lima - Several players of Peruvian top-flight team Cienciano Cusco were threatened with guns by robbers as they received their pay at the club headquarters, the players said Thursday. Three armed and masked men stormed on Wednesday into club premises in the Magisterio neighbourhood of Cusco, as several players were getting paid. In the presence of nine football players, the alleged criminals reportedly took off with 90,000 dollars.

"We were in serious danger," said Cienciano veteran Juan Carlos Bazalar.

The most dramatic moment in the attack happened as Bazalar and Carlos Solis tried to escape. The attackers aimed their weapons at them, but they abstained from firing at the players' request, according to reports.

Cienciano president Juvenal Silva said the club is still in a position to pay the players their salaries.

Bazalar, in turn, criticized local media for reporting on when and how much players get paid.
