Amsterdam - A storm alert was issued Wednesday morning in the Netherlands as winds as high has 120 kilometres per hour were forecast, leading flight cancellations and delays at Schiphol Airport. Dozens of flights were cancelled Wednesday morning at the airport outside Amsterdam as delays for incoming flights ran up to two hours.

Only 20 flights per hour were able to land at the largest Dutch airport Wednesday morning as opposed to 60 per hour on normal days.

The delays were expected to increase as the storm's intensity rises during the day, an airport spokeswoman warned.

The Dutch Royal Meteorological Institute said winds were expected to increase to 110 kmh during the day but might be clocked as high as 120 kmh near the coast.

The storm was forecast to dissipate by the late afternoon or early evening.
