Washington - Republican presidential hopeful John McCain won his party's primary in Ohio Tuesday over rival Mike Huckabee, television networks projected based on exit polling. The Democratic Party's nomination battle between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama remained too close to call as polls in Ohio closed at 7:30 pm (0030 GMT).
McCain was projected to win Vermont earlier Tuesday and hopes that additional victories in Texas and Rhode Island will give him the delegates needed to mathematically clinch the Republican nomination.
Huckabee, a former Arkansas governor, has refused to leave the party's race until McCain wins the 1,191 delegates that would put him over the top at the Republican Party's nominating convention in September in St Paul, Minnesota.
