LAS VEGAS - Michael Dell, the founder of Dell Computers, has suggested that computer companies should start planting trees in order to offset the environmental damage caused by producing and running a computer system.
Announcing the launch of a program called "Plant a Tree for Me", Mr. Dell said that this program would suggest that buyers of a notebook donate $2 for each piece while desktop system buyers donate $6. He added that the money obtained would be donated to various environmental groups to buy and plant trees.
Mr. Dell said that trees would absorb the carbon dioxide emitted from various machines as well as reduce the damaging effect made by the production of electricity for computers. "I challenge every PC vendor in the industry to join us in providing free recycling. This is a better way than government regulation", he said.
Dell Computers already have a free recycling service for their old computers. The company aims to recycle at least 275 million pounds of old computers by 2009. Mr. Dell said that his company would be able to achieve the target. "We're on track, a little ahead, in fact, to meet our goal", he added.
