Gelsenkirchen, Germany - Mirko Slomka's days as Schalke 04 coach could be over within a week if things go wrong in crucial matches with leaders Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga and Porto in the Champions League. The Bild daily reported on Tuesday that general manager Andreas Mueller has already been ordered to find a top coach if things continue to go wrong at the club.
Club boss Josef Schnusenberg was quoted by several news reports as saying that Slomka's days could soon be over.
He promised there will be no panic decision - "What happens if we win against Munich and Porto?" -, but wondered according to Bild that "maybe it is time for us to have a head coach with an international standing."
Slomka has come under attack after two straight league defeats left Schalke trailing Munich by nine points, a gap that could become even bigger if Munich beat them on Saturday.
Schalke crashed out of the German cup in late January and hold only a slim 1-0 advantage into the Champions League round of 16 return leg next Tuesday in Porto.
