New York/Pyongyang - The New York Philharmonic arrived Monday in North Korea in an unprecedented visit by the US institution to the communist, nuclear-armed country. About 300 people, including the 106 musicians of the orchestra, staff and journalists landed in Pyongyang on a South Korean airplane via Beijing, South Korean television station MBC reported.
Tuesday's planned concert at the East Pyongyang Great Theatre will be broadcast live on North Korea's state-run TV and represents the first important cultural contact between the US and the isolated country.
The musicians said they hope the concert will set a cultural exchange in motion.
