Nairobi - The African Union (AU) said Friday it remains engaged in the border crisis between Eritrea and Ethiopia but said the two parties lack goodwill to bring an end to the dispute. A United Nations mission monitoring the disputed frontier since the end of a 1998-2000 border war fought between the neighbouring foes began relocating to the Eritrean capital Asmara last week after their fuel and food supplies were cut by Eritrea.

"We are still there. The two parties are failing to arrive to a solution in spite of what we are doing," said newly-elected AU chairman Jean Ping. "There is lack of goodwill to work toward a resolution."

Tiny Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993, but the disputed border town of Badme remained under contention and sparked the war that killed some 70,000 people.

A border demarcation commission dissolved itself last year because the two Horn of Africa countries were unable to find a solution.

The frontier remains tense and with the withdrawal of the several thousand UN troops, observers fear a new war may break out.

Eritreans ,it is your own...
By: Teklai , Sun, 24 Feb 2008 21:12:47 GMT

Eritreans,it is your own problem that is leading you to be the most barbaric leadership in our time.the final & binding is when the border is demarcated on the ground.remember this"independent commission" means!& remember what Isayas said during the fight between Jebha/ELF/ & TPLF that lead to the demise of Jebha,Isayas said "jebha is fighting in Badme to claim a piece of land which is not ours" that piece of NEWS letter is stil in our hands, therefore there is no escape,as it lead to the demise of jebha it is leading to the demise of sha'ebia with the reality on the ground as a clear proof.finally, sha'ebia have done alot of crime which will be a burden for the coming generation of Eritrea.the rule of Sha'ebia that worked in the Sahel mountains will never work with outside wirld, not ever with the Eritrean people.if you don't learn how to to live with your neighbours, you will pay a heavy price.I wish the Eritrean people a better future with out the rogue & barbaric leadership of sha'ebia thanx

Why our gov't dinies to hold talkon the border issue?Do we all think the border crisis stops after the dimarcation and direct implimentation of the border under taken?Shold gov'ts anly concider the taking or giving of the earth/land a final solution to the dispute? What about the people living on these grounds for centuries sharing the same languge, culture and living stayl?Could dividing a hut into two parts bring pease among these two honourable people? Please don't be immotional and Let's think far more than our nose. What ever Our one man regime pretends to be peaseful but not that is why its say has not any acceptance in the worlds community.

AU statement is dishonest
By: Habte , Fri, 22 Feb 2008 17:06:27 GMT

The reason for the continuation of deadlock in the relations between the two countries is Ethiopia's refusal to abide by the "final and binding" terms of the Algiers Agreement of 2000. Eritrea has accepted the ruling of the Border Commission, lock-stock-and-barrel.
The AU displayed cowardice in the face of truth and the present statement is a lame attempt to escape from blame. He would have been better off to shut up. The facts about the case are open for scrutiny. Lying will not change them.
Africa and AU have a long way to go to exhonerate themselves from the shameful position they have taken in this conflict.

A.U chaiman comments on Eritrea
By: Tesfa , Fri, 22 Feb 2008 14:46:33 GMT

First there is obviously lack of good will, but not by both parties but by the one who has refused to implement the 'Final and Binding' legal rulling of the border. So the A.U chairman is being disengenous.

Secondly the A.U and the UN have a LEGAL obligation to enforce the ruling not only because they signed the 'Final and Binding' agreement but also because membership of Eritrea to both organizations affords it rights of protection against occupation.

Finally the use of the word 'Tiny' to refere to Eritrea betrays a biased sentiment. We(Eritreans) know your sentiments very well, but it might serve the editors of this medium better to put an effort to at least appear to be balanced.

Justice will prevail.
