Belgrade - A crowd of Serbs defaced the United States and Croatian embassies as violence again exploded in Belgrade following a rally against the independence of Kosovo. Groups of hundreds of people ransacked the US and Croat diplomatic missions, without police visible in the vicinity, local media reported. The flags of the two countries were burnt and replaced with Serb flags.
A vehicle was set on fire in front of the Canadian embassy, across the street from the US mission.
The incidents occurred after 200,000 people gathered in central Belgrade to rally against the independence of Kosovo. The West backed the secession of the province from Serbia and the US embassy was already targeted by hooligans at the start of the week.
