Volkswagen unveils Routan minivan at Chicago Show

Chicago - Volkswagen unveiled a new seven-passenger minivan called the Routan which was developed jointly with Chrysler for the North American market at the Chicago Motor Show. Based on the Chrysler Grand Voyager the car however features the traditional Volkswagen front grille and headlight design.

The interior has a second row with two large captain's chairs and a third row seating three people. The seats can lowered into the floor providing a massive interior loading space of 4,100 litres. Even with seven passengers aboard there is still space behind the third row for 926 litres of luggage.

The Routan will come standard with a 3.8-litre V6 power unit, offering 197 hp when combined with the standard six-speed automatic transmission. A 4-litre V6 will be available rated at 253 hp. The vehicle has been fitted with European tuned suspension and steering optimized for handling and improved driving dynamics. Standard items are all-season traction control and ESP.

Among the host of extras are a rear seat entertainment system with two 22.86 cm (9 inch) screens for the second and third row passengers, wireless headsets and remote control sliding doors with power windows. Touch screen navigation with a 20 meg hard drive is also available with a power lift gate and 13 cup holders.

Volkswagen lists the price for the basic model at 17,000 euros (25,000 dollars). The vehicle will be produced at an existing plant in Ontario, Canada.
