Sydney - Bad grammar, slang terms and texting shorthand in applications is making it difficult for some Australian university graduates to find good jobs, companies said Tuesday. "We talk to a lot of people in the graduate recruitment industry and they all say the same thing - the spelling is substandard, the grammar is not very good and at times the correspondence can be a bit familiar," Association of Graduate Employers spokesman Ben Reeves told The Sydney Morning Herald.
The complaint came in a week that saw a government report detail literacy levels stagnant for 40 years.
Annabelle Puddy, head of recruitment firm Accenture, said she was "absolutely dumbfounded at the amount of students who use very relaxed (language) as though they are communicating with their friends on text messaging or email, so everything is abbreviated in their applications."
Some say the lowest level of unemployment in 33 years has led to job applicants not needing to try hard to find positions.
