Kabul - An explosion rocked Kandahar city in southern Afghanistan on Sunday, killing more than 50 people and injuring more than 50 others, senior police official said. "At least 56 people were killed and more than 50 people were wounded when a suicide bomber detonated himself among the people, who gathered to watch a dog competition," a senior provincial police official, who did not want to be named, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

He said that many wounded people were in serious condition in Kandahar city hospital.

Earlier Interior Ministry spokesman Zemarai Bashary said that "dozens were killed and dozens more wounded," in an explosion that took place in western part of the Kandahar city.

A witness in Kandahar said that it was a suicide attack that killed more than 50 people including a famous former commander.

Kandahar province is the birth place of the Taliban militants, who are still entrenched in the province six years after being ousted from power by a US-led military invasion.
