Baghdad - At least four people were killed, and six police officers were wounded in attacks across Iraq on Saturday, Iraqi officials and media said. In the city of Hillah, some 100 kilometres south of Baghdad, US airstrikes killed three members of the Awakening Councils, security sources told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

"US helicopters raided a location of the Awakening Councils, killing three members," a leader of the Awakening Council told dpa.

The Awakening Councils are local police squads located mainly in Sunni Iraqi provinces to fight the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

In another incident, suspected al-Qaeda militants killed an army officer in Mafraq district in Baquba, some 60 kilometres north of the capital, the Voices of Iraq (VOI) news agency said.

In southern Baquba, two policemen were injured when an explosive device was detonated targeting a military vehicle.

Joint US-Iraqi forces detained five al-Qaeda militants during inspection operations in the Khan Bani Saad area of Baquba, VOI said, while Iraqi forces found five bodies in Anbar, some 110 kilometres west the Iraqi capital.

In Kirkuk, some 250 kilometres north of Baghdad, two police officers were injured when an explosives-laden vehicle detonated targeting their patrol, VOI reported.

Meanwhile in Basra, some 550 kilometres south of Baghdad, two police officers were wounded when militants opened fire on their patrol, sources told dpa.

In Samarra, 125 kilometres north of Baghdad, Iraqi forces imposed a blanket curfew on people and vehicles, as construction firms started work on shrines to Imams Ali al-Hady and Hassan al- Askary, sources told VOI.

Iraqi authorities found a large weapon cache and explosives during a military operation in western Karbala.
