Berlin - For Valentine's Day the traditional items to send your love is flowers, at least according to the popular custom. There was a time, however, when lovers composed a poem, said style consultant Jan Schaumann of Berlin. Those who want to give their love something special should also reach for the pen and put some thoughts in writing a few lines. What really belongs on the card that accompanies the flowers is a poem.

"I feel Valentine's Day is supposed to be commemorated traditionally. Quickly buying a bouquet of roses on February 14 is a bit loveless," said Schaumann.

If a man sits down and writes a few lines, he can show his partner how important she is to him, Schaumann said, adding that sending flowers and writing a poem on Valentine's Day are not just reserved for men.

"I find it completely alright when a women sends her partner flowers," he said. It is less common, but the tradition doesn't have to be viewed so narrowly. Valentine's Day goes back centuries. It has been considered the day for couples since the Middle Ages.
