Islamabad/Kabul - The Pakistani Ambassador to Afghanistan was reported missing and feared kidnapped late Monday in Pakistan's restive north-west tribal region where Taliban militants have become increasingly active, officials and media reports said. The report followed military officials' stating that a Pakistani security forces had captured a senior Taliban commander, Mullah Mansour Dadullah, following a firefight along the border.

Envoy Tariq Azizuddin had been travelling by road from the Pakistani city of Peshawar to the Afghan capital of Kabul Monday when he, his driver and a bodyguard went missing that evening in the Khyber region just before the border, local media reported.

"We are looking into the matter and at this stage we cannot deny or confirm the kidnapping of the ambassador," Muhammad Sadiq, Pakistan's Foreign Ministry spokesman, was quoted as saying by the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan.
