Hamburg - German Chancellor Angela Merkel rejected Monday a proposal from Ankara to provide Turkish-trained teachers to educate minority children in German public schools. Speaking in the northern city of Hamburg, Merkel said she had nothing against several existing bilingual Turkish-German secondary schools operating in big German cities, but teachers in Germany had to be German-trained.

Merkel said she had made her view plain to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan when he raised the proposal with her Friday.

His suggestion triggered an outcry in Germany from both the left and right. In Germany, most school-teachers are public servants who gain lifelong tenure in exchange for an oath of loyalty to the state.
