Algeciras, Spain - Spanish cleaners were Monday removing oil released by the remains of a freighter which has been stuck off Gibraltar since colliding with an oil tanker in mid-August, regional officials said. Dozens of people cleaned about half a kilometre of coast in the Algeciras area.
The Panama-flagged MS New Flame, with a cargo of 42,000 tons of scrap metal, sank partly after the collision.
On Saturday, the ship sank further in stormy weather, with only a small part of it left visible.
Spanish reports said fuel emanating from the New Flame had contaminated several kilometres of coast. The Gibraltar authorities, however, described the spill as "small."
Environmentalists accuse the British enclave of not having taken appropriate action to remove the wreck. Attempts to lift it out of the sea were to continue.
