PRINCETON, N.J., Feb. 5 Democrats Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama were in a virtual dead heat heading into the Super Tuesday primaries and caucuses, a national poll said.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., maintained his lead in the Republican race, leading former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney 45 percent to 25 percent among GOP voters, the latest Gallup Poll Daily reported.

The poll, tracking information from Wednesday through Monday, showed Clinton, the senator from New York, was favored by 47 percent of the respondents. Sen. Obama of Illinois was the preferred nominee of 43 percent. The poll had a 4 percent margin of error.

Gallup collected data after former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina suspended his campaign for the Democratic nomination.

McCain's lead was at least 19 percentage points on each of the three days, Princeton, N.J.-based Gallup said.

Gallup interviewed 949 Democrats and Democratic-leaning independent voters eligible to vote in the Tuesday Democratic presidential primaries and caucuses.

In the GOP race, Gallup interviewed 697 Republicans and Republican-leaning independents eligible to vote in the party's presidential primaries and caucuses.
