WASHINGTON, Feb. 3
Teens show love for Miley/Hannah
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 3 American girls proved they love singer-actress Miley Cyrus, making her "Hannah Montana" concert movie No. 1 in U.S. theaters this weekend.
Buena Vista's "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour" raked in $29 million in estimated weekend ticket sales, Box Office Mojo reported Sunday.
Another new movie, "The Eye," a thriller starring Jessica Alba and Alessandro Nivola, came in at No. 2 with $13 million in estimated receipts.
The romantic comedy "27 Dresses" stayed at No. 3 with $8.4 million, while "Juno," starring Ellen Page, surged from seventh to No. 4 in its ninth week in U.S. theaters with $7.45 million.
No. 5 this week is "Meet the Spartans" with $7.13 million in sales.
Rounding out the Top 10 were "Rambo," $7 million; "The Bucket List," $6.85 million; "Untraceable," $5.4 million; "Cloverfield," $4.9 million; and "There Will Be Blood," $4.76 million.
Bowing out from the top tier were "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" after seven weeks in the theaters and "Mad Money."
Federal court upholds Hatch's conviction
BOSTON, Feb. 3 Richard Hatch, who earned notoriety on the TV series "Survivor," has had his tax evasion conviction upheld by the U.S. District Court of Appeals in Boston.
The champion of the first season of the popular CBS series had been attempting to convince the federal appellate court to reduce the prison sentence he received after being convicted of not paying taxes on his "Survivor" winnings, The Providence (R.I.) Journal said Saturday.
A federal court in Providence in 2006 found that Hatch had filed false tax returns in order to avoid paying taxes on nearly $1.4 million, which included the reality series' $1 million top prize.
The 46-year-old is serving a 51-month prison sentence for that conviction and had been hoping to have his conviction overturned Friday, the Journal said.
Hatch's attorney argued that "Survivor" executives told his client he would not have to pay anything on his winnings, leading Hatch to believe CBS would pay any required taxes.
Yet the court dismissed such arguments and upheld Hatch's conviction, meaning the "Survivor" champion will have to continue serving his prison term.
WGA, studios reach tentative agreement
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 3 The Writers Guild of America has reached a tentative agreement with top Hollywood studios that could bring an end to the lengthy writers' strike, sources say.
Individuals familiar with the negotiations said the two sides have reached a new contract outline and if the proposal is passed by the WGA board, it could mean an official end to the strike that has been crippling Hollywood for three months, the Los Angeles Times said Sunday.
The new writers' contract was the direct result of renewed negotiations between the two sides, which culminated Friday with a marathon session including top WGA officials and the heads of the Walt Disney Co. and News Corp.
The contract still needs to be ratified by the 10,500 members of the guild, but a supportive vote by the WGA board could bring an immediate end to the writers strike.
The Times said the tentative contract could be voted on by the WGA board as early as Friday.
Spears still hospitalized after hold ends
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 3 Pop singer Britney Spears remained in a Los Angeles medical center Sunday despite the expiration of her 72-hour psychiatric hold.
The "Toxic" singer had been ordered to undergo the three-day observation period at the University of California-Los Angeles Medical Center, but that mandatory hold expired Sunday morning, People magazine reported.
Legal experts told People Spears' extended stay at the medical facility may be due to an additional 14-day hold being ordered by her psychiatrist or Spears deciding to stay on a voluntary basis.
One source close to the 27-year-old singer's family told the magazine the required hospital stay has been hard on both the "Blackout" star and her family members.
"It is a terrible situation," the unidentified source said of Spears' stay at the Stewart & Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital. "Britney is in a padded room. Her family is so worried about her."
