N'DJAMENA, Chad, Feb. 2 The president of the African country of Chad said he remained safe and in control as rebels advanced on the presidential palace in N'Djamena Saturday.
The rebels headed for the palace after entering the capital and battling government troops, the BBC reported.
Chadian President Idriss Deby, speaking through the country's foreign ministry, said he was inside the palace and the situation in the city was under control.
Jean Ping, the newly elected chairman of the African Union Commission, said he was "deeply preoccupied" by the situation in Chad, where Deby has ruled for 17 years amid political instability and violence, the BBC reported.
