Baghdad - Attacks carried out by two female suicide bombers on Baghdad's pet and bird markets left at least 11 people killed and 28 injured Friday, according to a security official. A woman suicide bomber wearing an explosive belt blew herself up in central Baghdad's al-Ghazl pet market, killing eight and wounding 20, General Kasim Atta, the spokesman for the Baghdad operation, told the state-owned al-Itaqya TV.
Another suicide bomber blew herself up in a bird's market in south-east Baghdad, killing at least three and wounding eight, the general said.
The blasts occurred Friday morning as the popular markets were teeming with people doing their weekend shopping.
Al-Ghazl market has been struck several times since the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. In November, a bomb hidden in a small box exploded, killing 15 people and injuring dozens.
