BRUSSELS, Jan. 6 Northern Europe stands to gain from global warming while Mediterranean areas would lose lucrative tourist business, a report for the European Commission said.North Sea beaches would replace the Riviera as a vacation destination, The Financial Times said. About 100 million people now head from northern Europe to Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal every year in one of the world's biggest tourist migrations, spending $130 billion. The more tourists stay home or go to other destinations, the larger the distributional impact in Europe will be, the paper said. The report predicts an additional 87,000 deaths from heat every year in Europe if average temperatures rise by 5 degrees Fahrenheit. On the plus side, some lives would be saved by higher temperatures in the north.Copyright 2007 by UPI
