Berlin - President Hamid Karzai has expressed doubt whether the deployment of more foreign troops to Afghanistan will improve the security situation, in an interview published in a German newspaper Wednesday. "I am not sure whether deploying more troops would be the right answer," Karzai told Die Welt.

Concentrating on the training camps and refuges where the terrorist groups had fled was more important, Karzai said.

"Afghanistan is not a (terrorist) refuge. It was one, but we have reversed that," he said.

"For us, the war is not here but elsewhere," the Afghan president said.

Afghanistan needed to expand its human capital and institutions more than anything else, Karzai said pointing to the army, the police, the civil service and the judiciary.

US President George W Bush has called repeatedly for NATO countries to respond to the need for greater effort in Afghanistan, but major alliance members such as Germany and France have restricted the way their forces can be deployed.

A furore broke earlier this year over comments from US Defence Secretary Robert Gates after he was reported to have criticized the training of NATO troops deployed in Afghanistan.

The Western alliance has around 37,000 troops deployed in the country.

My say
By: Salim Qayum , Thu, 31 Jan 2008 04:27:38 GMT

I think that still Afghanistan needs a strong presence of the International forces but they need to think about more consolidation and a kind of strategic approach. In a way I would like to support Mr. Karzai that only increasing the number of troops would not solve the problem. The question is that, what is the goal ? securing Afghanistan or removing terrorism? . Now the strategy to lead to reach the goal has to be clear .

Karzai is making mistakes

I think Karzai is making irresponsible mistakes that may lead him to severe consequences. He should make his remarks on such sensitive issues with great caution! He, by making such irresponsible remarks that Afghanistan war does not need the deployment of more forces is risking the future of the Afghan nation, their freedom and the support and interest of the international partners! I think, the Afghan people are all in favor of increasing the number of troops and staying committed to defeat this common enemy utterly! I understand that Karzai's concern is to concentrate on the sanctuaries of Alqaida and thir support chains in Pakistan, but having an increased large number of troops in Afghanistan may result in reduction of Pakistan's secret support to Taliban, fearing an invasion, and if needed, these forces could be used to invade the pakistani controlled soil, Waziristan!

Karzai needs to rethink over any remarks he is making. He is surely not speaking in the interest of Afghanistan for the last two weeks and it seems like he is turning against its international supporters! Bottom line, consequences may result in getting his ass replaced!
