Australian cricketers told to cut the lip

Sydney - Australians were shocked Wednesday when their head of state broke protocol to criticize the world-champion cricket team for verbally abusing its opponents. Governor-General Michael Jeffery, the queen's representative in Australia, joined in the intense public disquiet over the arrogance and loutish behaviour on display in the just-concluded four-match Test series against India.

"Their example is absolutely critical to the well-being of cricket and sportsmanship in this country," Jeffrey said. "While we should be playing the game tough and hard and all of that sort of thing, I think there's also a need to really take care of the fundamental courtesies and good manners."

In a rare, perhaps unprecedented rebuke, the governor-general described as "totally un-Australian" trying to unnerve opponents through insults and snide remarks - a practise that Australian players call "sledging," and which they claim to have perfected as a way of inducing "mental disintegration" in their opponents.

Sledging has the tacit support of their cricketing authority, Cricket Australia.

"I think there have been times in recent years where it's obvious that things (have deteriorated)," the retired army general said. "Questioning umpires' decisions, not walking, sledging - which I'm totally against in a vicious sense."

He said the behaviour of the home team at the conclusion of the Sydney Test, which gave Australia a 2-0 advantage in the series, had been a "wake-up call" for a return to sportsmanship on the field.

Captain Ricky Ponting and his team failed to shake hands with the Indian players after winning the Sydney Test, and his players stayed at the crease when they knew they were out and claimed catches they knew were not properly taken.

A front-page article in the top-circulation daily called for Ponting to be sacked for a win-at-all-costs attitude that had brought shame on his country.

Indian cricket commentator Harsha Bogle called for sledging to be outlawed and for Cricket Australia to declare it outside the spirit of the game. Arjuna Ranatunga, a former Sri Lankan captain and chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket, has also called for a ban on sledging, saying that players "should stop all shouting in the grounds."

Sledging
By: Henry Jayaweera , Wed, 30 Jan 2008 18:34:21 GMT

Governor General Michael Jeffrey's comments on "sledging" - a purely Australian term for disgusting Cricket Australia behavior- by Governor General Michael Jeffrey has brought a spark of grace to the otherwise disgraceful behavior of Ausrtralian team players. Cricket-a gentlemen's game deserves better than the devious, win at any cost tactics of some teams. Notwithstanding the large amounts of money involved in winning, we poor spectators have a right to gentlemanly conduct by all and sundry. The spirit of the game cannot be valued in Australian dollars. Come on Mates! Hear your chief's admirable call. Play hard, play to win-but don't play low. Nothing-least of all money- can redeem your prestige.

Sledging
By: ACY1 , Wed, 30 Jan 2008 15:06:39 GMT

How the Australian cricket team can take pride in their accomplishments is beyond me when they rely upon sledging to ensure a win on the field. Sledging is like drugs. They give an unfair advantage. And just like with drugs, players must be penalized for practising this travesty. The irony is that Australia has enough talent to win without cheating. GG Jeffrey is to be commended for his comments and it revives my respect for Australia. Someone in authority has to tell Ponting and his puerile gang to zip it and just play the game. The entire cricket world is fed up with their rudeness and arrogance. Imagine the example they set for Australia's children!

Well Said!
By: Observer , Wed, 30 Jan 2008 05:26:59 GMT

Hats off to the Govener General for speaking out on this issue. It is high time that someone took courage to point out the loutish behaviour and arrogance of some of the Australian cricketers. It is sad when some have to resort to these tactics when they have the ability to win games without them. Obviously, they are feeling insecure!

Not cricket
By: Rama Kandasamy , Wed, 30 Jan 2008 03:01:55 GMT

It is about time that the Australians take a deep look at their behaviour especially in the cricketing arena. May be the folks cannot accept defeat and further more their behaviour only makes one wonder if these guys are actually hell bent on bullying the oponents or play the game. Cricket has lost its flavour in Australia because of their miserable conduct. For the head of the state to make some stinging comments one wonders if the Aussies could ever win matches if they stop "sledging". I wish the rest of the country takes this as a wake-up call and come heavily upon these players to play the game in the right spirit> The world opinion is that we Aussies are very racial and this obnoxious behaviour by the cricketers only proves that these are a bunch of fellows who do not have much of education.

Payback Time!
By: Sahil , Wed, 30 Jan 2008 02:37:22 GMT

Its just payback time. Aussies .,.. stop acting like cry babies.

You play good cricket. Play that only.

What did McGrath tell Sarwan in WI.
Brandes in Zimbabwe.

Was that mannered?

Monkey is too common a slang in India. We have stories, folktales and all kinda monkey jokes.

If you cant understand the calling an Indian a bastard or a motherf***** is insulting .. u have no right to get pissed off when an Indian doesnt care abt how racist the word monkey is.

EOD.
