NEW ORLEANS, Jan. 29 The prospect of two open U.S. House seats in Louisiana brought out at least six candidates Tuesday, the first day to would-be congressmen to register.

In the 1st District, where Republican Bobby Jindal resigned after being elected governor, state Rep. Tim Burns of Mandeville and state Sen. Steve Scalise of Jefferson registered for the Republican primary, The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune reported. University of New Orleans psychology instructor Gilda Reed of Metaine registered on the Democratic side, the newspaper said.

In the 6th District, where Republican Rep. Richard Baker is quiting to take a job in the private sector, former state Rep. Woody Jenkins of Baton Rouge tossed his hat in the ring on the Republican side. State Reps. Don Cazayoux of New Roads and Michael Jackson of Baton Rouge entered the fray on the Democratic side.

The deadline for candidates to sign up is Thursday at 5 p.m. and the party primaries will be March 8. It's the first time in three decade in which Louisiana voters will choose congressional candidates by political parties.
