Kitzbuehel, Austria - United States ski racer Scott Macartney has been brought out of an induced coma as he is recovering well from a horror crash at the Kitzbuehel downhill race. Race organizers and US officials said on Sunday that Macartney will remain in an Innsbruck clinic for further surveillance.
"He will fully recover," the Austrian race organizers said in a statement, adding that according to US officials Macartney was "already making jokes again."
The US ski federation said that team doctor Charles Rich has given Macartney "a very good prognosis."
Rich said that Macartney suffered a severe concussion. The racer was put into the artificial coma in the Innsbruck clinic on Saturday afternoon after his high-speed crash on the final jump just before the finish line of the world's most difficult downhill race.
Macartney lost his helmet as his head hit the ground hard, and the skier was unconscious as he slid over the line in front of a packed crowd.
