TRENTON, N.J., Jan. 15 Arizona Sen. John McCain and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani are locked in a statistical dead heat among likely voters in New Jersey, a new poll indicates.
According to the latest Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey Poll, McCain has 29 percent support among GOP voters in the Garden State, followed by Giuliani, with 25 percent, the Asbury (N.J.) Park Press reported Tuesday.
McCain's four-point advantage is within the poll's margin of error. The New Jersey primary will be Feb. 5.
Among Democrats, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton continues to lead in New Jersey by a wide margin, 12 points over her closest rival, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill, the newspaper reported.
"What's great about this race is that it's wide open," said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute.
Murray said McCain's gain in the poll has been at Giuliani's expense, noting that most of the Arizona senator's 17-point boost since October came from one-time Giuliani supporters.
In an October poll, Giuliani led among Republicans, with 44 percent of likely primary
voters.
