LOS ANGELES - The Bucket List, which stars Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, topped the North American box office raking in $19.5 million. The film tells the story of two cancer patients played by Nicholson and Freeman, who decided to tour the world before they die.
Disney movie National Treasure: Book of Secrets was number four this weekend down from the top spot last time around. The film collected $11.5 million Second in the list was "First Sunday", which took $19 million in collections.
Teen pregnancy comedy "Juno" was third with collections of $14 million. Alvin and the Chipmunks came in fifth with collections of $11.5 million. Other films in the top 10 included "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: A Veggie Tales Movie" and "In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale."
Box office research firm Media By Numbers said the total takings for the top 12 films was $108.8 million, an increase of 4 percent over corresponding figures at the same time last year.
"The Bucket List's achievement is all the more sweet because it was panned by critics. However Warner Bros. said the main audience of over 35 seemed to warm to the film. The studio also said that the film has made $21 million to date and will be able to capitalize on the upcoming Martin Luther King holiday.
Will Smith's "I Am Legend" was No 6 this weekend with collections of $8.1 million. Overall the film has made $240 million in five weeks. "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" has made $187.5 million in four weeks.
